Overflow

Since I have been pumping twice a day at work, I have produced enough to feed Birdie and store 3-5 bags per evening. The frozen milk bags began to take over our freezer.  This is the top shelf — more than 1/2 of the total freezer space – at the end of last week (the three giftbags are full of stacked breastmilk bags and operate as dispensers with slats cut in the bottom to remove the oldest milk first):

Clearly, things were getting out of hand. So, with $200 burning a hole in our pocketbook (kidding!) and this awkward/empty space in our kitchen:

we set out to purchase a deep freezer.  We are now the proud owners of a stand-alone freezer:

Is there anything that can make you feel quite as old as getting excited over a new appliance??  I’m excited that with this purchase, we have 6-12 months worth of storage for the breastmilk, versus only 3 with the refrigerator/freezer.  Plus, I no longer have to worry in the middle of the night about whether or not the freezer door popped open the last time someone went in for an ice cube and all of the breastmilk is thawing as we sleep (oh the things to worry about!).

Note all of the tupperware on the counter in the last picture?   One of R’s clients gave her a Ghiradelli Double Chocolate Dipping Bar and we spent  Saturday with R’s sisters dipping peanut butter balls, pretzels, strawberries, bananas, and cashews in chocolate.  Heavenly!

What a great idea! I’m so impressed with your production! I totally get the whole appliance excitement! our dishwasher is failing and I can’t wait to get a new one when it dies!! Not that I want to spend the mullah!

I’m so jealous. I pump 6 times a day for almost 30 minutes each time and just get enough for one bottle each–6 ounces total.
    You are so lucky.
    Now I’m crying.

  3. Mina says:

How cool! Definitely a great idea!

And, umm, the dipping bar chocolate sounds devine. Mmmmm. :0)

  4. Jill says:

WoW!!! I am sooooooo jealous. I never get enough for one baby, let alone two!! You are awesome!!
    Luck girl.

I totally get the excitement over the most random things!!! You must be a mom!

  5. Glamcookie says:

Yay! I’m thinking we may need to do this at some point, too. Mama is a milk machine! Plus it would be nice to have the extra food storage.

  6. Casey says:

Awesome supply of milk! Woohoo! I thought I had tons (one gift bag full)!! I gave it all away though (as my Bird just nurses and doesn’t drink bottles).

You are doing great! Keep it up!

Just curious, how many ounces (average) are you able to pump at a time?

  7. A. says:

What a great supply – I’m very jealous! I hope that pumping goes as well for me when I return to work.

  8. Sarah B. says:

Ha! Yes, I know that appliance feeling, boy adults are lame ;)

Yay for safely storing that abundance of liquid gold!

  9. Jen says:

Glad I’m not the only one with crazy overproductive boobs! I have already filled 3 boxes of milk since the end of December (half of our freezer too) and we too are getting ready to purchase a deep freeze! I can easily pump one side and get one 5-6 oz, so it is becoming a big need, fast. Congrats on the supply and new addition!

Yeah, about appliances: I got all giddy when I got a toaster that can toast FOUR SLICES! AT ONCE!!
What do you do with all these extra gallons of milk when Birdie is weaned? Just curious!

  11. Chocolate dipping? Yummy!

The freezer is awesome. That’s some incredible milk production you have going there….and to think that one of your early Birdie posts was how difficult the breastfeeding was. You really give me SO MUCH hope that I can do this too!

We got the opportunity to buy a freezer like that last summer for $50 (used of course) and it has been sitting empty all year. We just started filling it in anticipation of being baby poor. We also figured it would be good to do a ton of cooking pre baby to have reheatable meals post baby but I never realized how handy it would be for breastmilk. Oh the storage possibilities!

    Enjoy your new appliance!

PS – I saw some nifty plastic storage containers for breast milk storage bags at BRU. Registered for two as the seemed to keep it all pretty well organized.

I am so jealous of your amazing milk production!! WOW! I’m barely pumping enough to feed Ryan for the day. I also love the gift bag idea… we may have to try that!

  14. dariasquirrel says:

so funny- we bought a freezer exactly like yours a summer ago for our extreme garden harvest and i was over the moon thinking that we grew enough produce to keep us fed for awhile! yours use is somewhat similar for babe!!! how rewarding!!! all that pumping is really paying off!!! (you KNOW that freezer paid for itself already!) hope you are doing great!

  15. Lisa says:

I’m so impressed with the stash you’ve built up already. We bought chocolate (although not as nice as yours) to make chocolate covered oreos with sprinkles. Not sure where that idea came from but we can’t wait to make them.

  16. cindyhoo2 says:

THAT is alot of milk lady! You bought a whole freezer– that is so great (and kinda funny). The really happy part is that you will have months of milk for Birdie even after you are ready to stop pumping (or move on to pumping for baby #2). Perhaps you can have a second career as a wetnurse? LOL

  17. Wow! That’s a lot of milk! Good job! Enjoy the freezer (and the dipping chocolate!)

  18. amyblossom says:

holy breast milk! you are amazing! I totally feel you on the stand alone freezer. we are thinking about the same purchase (and have the very same awkward space that is not housing the highchair) for all the pureed food.

  19. Wow, mama! Your breast milk stock is quite admirable! And too, too fun that you now own a deep freezer and chocolate dipper. Because now you can make a bunch of chocolate dipped stuff and FREEZE IT!

  20. Joy says:

Impressive supply you have there! That freezer fits perfectly in that space too. Off to tell C about the dipping chocolate…

  21. Michell says:

oooh. A freezer. That’s one of those appliances I keep telling myself I’m going to get someday.
That is a lot of milk.
Oh and of course, yummy. chocolate.

  22. jessie says:

Nice work on the pumping!!! You’ll have such a great supply stored up
